The Trauma of Neglect:
Identifying and Treating it in Therapy

Why Nothing Matters is a 9-session on-demand course with Ruth Cohn, MFT, offering a powerful therapeutic framework for understanding the often-invisible impact of early relational neglect.

While neglect may leave no obvious story, scars, or flashbacks, its effects can shape identity, attachment, emotional regulation, sexuality, and relationships in profound ways. In this program, Ruth helps clinicians recognize how the trauma of absence lives on in clients who often say “nothing happened,” yet carry deep pain, shame, disconnection, and confusion.

Drawing on decades of clinical experience, Ruth introduces a neglect-informed lens that helps therapists identify what is missing—not just what is spoken. Across approximately 4.25 hours of teaching, participants will learn to recognize subtle markers of neglect, work skillfully with clients who have limited narrative access, and bring language, validation, and attuned care to experiences that have long gone unseen. This course is available in both French and English, with continuing education credits available for the English version. Designed for trauma professionals across modalities, it offers a meaningful opportunity to deepen clinical understanding of a population too often overlooked in trauma treatment.

The Hidden Trauma of Neglect:
Healing Unmet Attachment Needs

The Hidden Trauma of Neglect: Healing Unmet Attachment Needs is an on-demand course with Ruth Cohn, MFT, designed to help clinicians understand the deep and lasting impact of childhood neglect.

As the field becomes increasingly trauma-informed, Ruth brings long-overdue attention to neglect as a serious and often overlooked form of trauma—one that shapes the developing brain, the body, identity, attachment, and relationships well into adulthood. This course offers a compassionate, practical framework for recognizing neglect and understanding how unmet attachment needs continue to affect clients later in life.

Across the training, Ruth explores how neglect becomes embedded not only in narrative gaps, but in somatic experience, emotional life, and relational patterns. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of childhood neglect, work with clients whose histories are difficult to access through words alone, and support them in reconstructing a meaningful understanding of their lives. The course also addresses the limits of talk therapy, the role of nonverbal and embodied interventions, the complexities of grief and ambivalence toward caregivers, and the importance of therapist self-awareness and support. This program is ideal for professionals who want to deepen their ability to work with one of the most invisible yet consequential forms of trauma.
